Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes and systems.

With engineering calculations being used throughout the product development process, it is vital that these calculations are captured and shared as critical intellectual property. Traditionally calculations are done through notebooks, calculators and reference books. These are unmanaged, undefined, uncontrolled and difficult to share and re-use.
